This stunning and spiritual structure is a place of refuge, mourning, and healing. The Temple Burn is a solemn ritual, a cleansing, a rite of passage, and a pyre. All are welcome to participate, bring offerings, mementos of loved ones, write, cry and meditate. On the final day of Burning Man, the temple is burned; a symbolic gesture to bring closure and healing.
The Temple will be made from 2,000 pieces of dead wood that had been destroyed by the pine bark beetle in the Sierra Foothills. The temple crew hopes with this message to help spread the word about the state of our forests and to encourage other people to find uses for these trees before they rot. Help the Temple Crew built it by donating here, there is still time!
The Tree of Ténéré
A towering life-like tree that offers shade to wanderers, adventure to climbers, and infinite possibility to those gathered beneath its 25,000 LED leaves.
This stunning and yet interactive landscape of meandering pathways of light will shift colors and reflections during the day, mirroring the sky. At night it will flow and glow in full illuminated interactivity, engaging you in a walkable dichroic surface. The highly versatile shape of Aqueous is created from three, modular curved platforms derived from arcs in the Golden Ratio. Placed together, these platforms create a giant landscape of meandering pathways within elegant geometric patterns.
Whatever your creed your reliance on the sun is unquestionable. We have worshipped it as a God. Spent lifetimes studying it through science. Yet human hands will never touch its surface. Celestial Field brings our sun to the Playa for us to dance in its glory. Triggering our own solar flare.
By day this sea of swaying rods will act as a field of mirrors, reflecting and intensifying the suns natural beauty and thus creating a maze of ever changing light to explore and play within. At sunset everything transforms. The field morphs, bursting into a sea of light reacting to movement and mimicking the fluid almost pulsing nature of the suns corona. The pavilion layout is informed by the patterns of sunspots and flares forming on the suns surface. To have a better understanding of it, check out this animation:
With a successful proof of concept and deployment of the horn in 2016, La Victrola will make a new appearance at Burning Man in 2017, placing the horn on top of a nine-foot high cabinet, accessed by two spiral staircases on the sides. This iteration completes the world’s largest gramophone as intended, and creates a viewing platform above and an interactive lounge below.
La Victrola’s theater hosts period appropriate vaudeville and music performances. Past performers include gypsy jazz, bluegrass, a vaudeville cabaret, and a 40 person symphony orchestra. Its large stage provides ample room for dancers as well, and has hosted burlesque, belly dancing, tap and flamenco.
